Damascus Document

Damascus Document
This Zadokite document accorded the symbol CD was discovered in the Cairo geniza by S. Schechter in 1896, and is dated in the 10th cent. CE. It is now known to be related to the Dead Sea scrolls. In two columns, it regulates Sabbath observances more strictly than the Pharisees. On that day it is forbidden even to lend something to a friend. The document appears to emanate from a renewal movement within Essenism [[➝ Essenes]] which has parted from the main body, and is inspired by a vision of the ‘new covenant’ (Jer. 24:7). In the 2nd cent. BCE the group ‘in the land of Damascus’ reacted against tendencies within Judaism friendly to Hellenization.
